There's an article in this months WIRED magazine about a software engineer called Mike Fotoohi, who has set about building an accurate online version of planet Earth. Whatsmore he's compiling it in his spare time using free-to-source info from NASA and openstreetmap.org! He then runs this mass of data through various computer modelling programmes. The result will be a perfect full scale (albeit online) replica of real life. The BETA version entails digital replicas of New York, Washington and LA, complete with avatars, and apparently has a better user experience than Second Life. The article concludes with "Once completed, you may never have to leave home again." Christ.
