As the incessant countdown to the Olympics at the top of the BT Tower (just the 816 days to go) keeps goading us, I've decided to do an Olympicy post.
Pretty jealous of the athletes who'll be competing for the podium so I propose a new event. It's an event for creatives and it's called The Adathon...
It's a marathon. But with hurdles. A 3-legged-marathon with hurdles - you're tied to your creative partner all the while.
The gun sounds and you're off, hobbling around the streets of Soho on a highly liable to change route.
Clients are riding ahead in the camera car, peering out of the back with smuggest of smug-smirks plastered across their hideously-ugly mugs. Their role is to lay more hurdles in your path and repaint that line you're supposed to follow, making you retrace your footsteps umpteen times over.
Along the way Account Managers line the streets. Fag in one hand, Blackberry in t'other, they e-mail you 'the latest brief', (a full sentence tweaked) every 35 seconds and shout their jargon-infested support from behind the railings.
It's relentless. Well I say that but a redeeming feature of The Adathon is that instead of water stations dozens of pub tables are set up and loaded with alcohol.
After a refreshing pint or seventeen you three-leglessly (ho ho ho) lumber your way towards the last mile, which just to spice things up a bit, the organisers have seen fit to randomly lace with landmines. I think the Media buyers did that.
If you're lucky enough to negotiate that deathtrap you reach the finale. Which is just a rip-off of Gladiators really. There's a giant fuck-off travellator which is much more mental than the one on Gladiators 'cus it's about 50 metres long with ever-increasing speed and incline. At the top there's a rope where each creative team swings through a 48-sheeter (which simply bears Charles Saatchi's face) onto the crash mats and over the finishing line.
However, the team who cross the line first aren't necessarily the winners.
No, no - that's a decision for the clients. And these convoluted meets can last utmost of a week. Adjudication is always ultra baffling, as it's often the broken, limbless and ugly team who actually finished last that the clients decide to name winners.
So there it is. Ladies and gentlefucks, I give you The Adathon.
Cynical? Me? Never.
I've e-mailed this to Seb Coe, he'll love it.
