Every couple of months Elmwood design hosts an evening of poetry called SoPo. We toddled along last night, clinging to their websites promise of free entry, a plethora of gourmet canopes and many-a free beer. Also quite interested in the poetry.
Heather Phillipson read first. We particularly liked the way she'd pick a random subject and then really go to town on it, creating an interesting and funny piece... such as contract between a mother and her new-born written in legal jargon.
Inua Ellams was there too, reciting his poems from memory - including a narrative of a midnight walk from the Market Bar to his home in Camberwell, and an amusing piece entitled "A list of women who should be me wife".
Captivating and massively inspiring stuff. Get your arses down to the next SoPo evening.
Bloody poetry, it's love-erly.
(By the by, SoPo is named after a simple Soho/Poetry word-smush, not, as host Laura pointed out, the Sexual Offences Prevention Order.)
